Computers & Internet

Internet Access

The library has Windows PCs and Chromeboxes for Internet access and Office functions (including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint), and two computers for library catalog access only. No Macintosh computers are available.

All patrons wishing to use the Windows PCs must have a valid OCLN library card. Users who do not live in Whitman and/or do not have a valid OCLN library card may obtain a one-day guest ID from a library staff member. Log-in credentials are not required for the Chromeboxes.

Policy on Acceptable Use of the Internet in the Library

  • Computer use at the Library is popular, and waits for available computers are possible. Computer sign-up software manages an automated wait list for patrons wishing to use the Windows PCs. There is no time management software on the Chromeboxes, but library staff may ask patrons to end their sessions if other patrons are waiting.

  • Library employees are happy to assist patrons as time allows, but a small staff in this busy library usually limits extended time away from the circulation desk. Patrons using computers are expected to have a working knowledge of how to operate a computer and search the Internet independently. If extensive research help is needed, patrons are advised to schedule an appointment to ensure an appropriate staff member is available.
