Whitman Public Library Policy for Library Closings Due to Holidays, Inclement Weather, Lack of Heat or Water, Other Emergency, or Town Hall Closings
Since Town Hall holiday/emergency closings are a result of union negotiations, and our union negotiations are not yet finalized, we are not obliged to follow town hall policy – however, in general it has been the policy for the Library to close when the town hall is closed for holidays and bad weather and other major emergencies.
In the case of bad weather or other town emergency, the Town Administrator will contact the director about closing the library. If this occurs, one of the trustees should be notified.
If an emergency or question of closing for inclement weather arises after town hall is closed, or on a Saturday, the decision on closing should be made by the director only after consultation with one of the trustees. If there is any question about the decision, then two trustees should be consulted. In the event that no trustee is available, then the Town Administrator should be consulted to give approval for closing the library.
If there is a failure of utilities (water, heat, lighting) in the building, one of the trustees must be consulted before any decision is made to close the library.
Appropriate signs should be posted on the front door of the library whenever any closing occurs, in order to inform the public.
